Proposed Changes to Inheritance Laws

At the end of last year there were some proposed changes put forward to changes in inheritance laws. Current laws date back to 1925 but under new legislation some cases have been able to challenge the strict application of rules of the out dated law.

The aim of the changes is to give more rights to the surviving partners or children of unmarried couples when one of them dies. The aim is also to remove the complex and costly ‘life interest’ trust arrangements that are placed on some other halves. If these changes are successful then the children, partners and cohabitants of people who die without having produced a will could benefit from the law at the very difficult period in their lives.
