Accidents at Work - Part Three

This is the third in a series of posts about different causes of accident at work. In this one we will look at injuries caused by lifting and injuries caused by others through mistake or incompetence.

Lifting Injuries
Back injuries are one of the largest causes of people taking time off work in the UK and many of these are caused by lifting accidents in the workplace. In the case of lifting at work it is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that adequate risk assessment has been carried out and suitable equipment is provided to aid or reduce the need for manual handling. This said, employees are responsible for conducting this work safely and if they do not do this or use equipment provided they will not be able to clam in the result of an accident.

Injuries Caused by Fellow Employees
Whilst this is not as common as some of the other types of accident at work it is still a problem. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that all employees are trained in both their job and a level of health and safety to a level where they will not pose a threat to others.

Any injury caused to you by a mistake or the incompetence of a colleague is most likely no fault of your own and you will almost always be entitled to make a claim. This could be from them using equipment improperly, leaving hazardous materials lying around or something as extreme as driving a forklift into you.

Make sure you never put yourself in harms way by participating in the incorrect use of equipment or partaking in any dangerous activity.
